THAILAND TRAVELS: A Journal   BANGKOK (cont'd) Page 2

FRIDAY 27th:    Late breakfast as everyone was a touch weary after inevitable jet-lag and sleep interruption from arrival of mother-in-law.
Did some small-time shopping in Sukhumvit Road for some basics and a new pair of shades for madam and to change some cash into local. A lunchtime beer (just the one) and snack and then back to the apartment.
A visit from Em, one of Aom's school-days friends, along with with her family happened around lunchtime [see photo].

  • LEFT   Aom's friend, Em popped round for a visit with her family.
  • RIGHT & BOTTOM:   Aom with her mum Somjit.

An opportunity not to be missed was in the making!     For the first time in 5 months, since the birth of our son, Jack, we were out on the town on our own.
So, what ensued was a bar-crawl down Soi 4 and Nana Plaza which has a plethora of different bars and clubs of all types. It was a great fun night out which ended at 2:30am.
At one stage in the night I woke up shivering and thought I was back in England. A quick check on the air-con revealed my error as in my semi-inebriated state I had turned the air-con dial clockwise instead on counter. It was 10ºC in the bedroom instead of the usual 23ºC and under a wafer-thin sheet it was decidedly nippy.

  • TOP ROW:    Our first solo night out in 5 months. A truly great night out in Nana.
  • CENTRE ROW LEFT:    Cheers!!
  • CENTRE ROW RIGHT:    Yep! It's Chang beer.
  • BOTTOM ROW LEFT:    A very pleasant night out in Nana, Sukhumvit, Bangkok.
  • BOTTOM ROW RIGHT:     Well even I'm allowed some fun now and again. With Aom and friend Kik in Climax night-club.

  • SATURDAY 28th:     Morning sported a mild hangover but not serious enough to do without breakfast.
Aom and her mum with Jack in tow beetled off to do some girlie things. Shopping (of course) and a trip to the salon and visits to a cousin or two who reside in Bangkok.
Me?     I did bugger-all.    Wrote a bit of this journal, edited some bits of video and stills on the MBA and did a puzzle or two and that was my afternoon, in my opinion, well spent.
A quiet night tonight. Took the family down to Sukhumvit Road to a restaurant and that was about it.

Well, start-em young is my philosophy! Baby Jack seems to like the look of Chang beer already.

The short video sequence below shows some typical Bangkok city centre scenes. The crazy traffic and the concrete jungle of layers of Skytrain or BTS can be seen. Part way through is a sequence descending in the glass-sided lift from our apartment down past the pool. Movie concludes with some scenes inside one of the huge shopping malls and a trip on one of the underground trains, or MRT.

    • TOP ROW:   More Bangkok city centre scenes.
    • TOP RIGHT:   The 'skyscraper' in the distance is the Baiyoke Sky Tower and is the highest structure in Thailand.
    • ROW 2 LEFT:    Evening photo of Wat Arun, the most iconic temple of Bangkok. "Wat" is Thai for temple.
    • ROW 2 RIGHT:    Wat Phra Kaew or 'The Temple of the Emerald Buddha' is the most important and most visited temple in Bangkok.
    • ROW 3 LEFT:    Inside a Bangkok public bus. You can see the road through the big holes in the wooden floor; bone-shakers!
    • ROW 3 RIGHT:     One of the plethora of street markets selling all manner of exotic (and not so exotic) produce.
    • ROW 4 LEFT:    Another food market.
    • ROW 4 RIGHT:     OINK!!   Just a snack for my dearest.
    • ROW 5 LEFT:    Another snack! She never stops eating.
    • ROW 5 RIGHT:    No comment !

    Bangok's a great city but it's wall-to-wall chaos.
Traffic light systems that are ignored at times and motorcycles that use the pavement/footways as short cuts to avoid the constant traffic jams.
No lane discipline; overtake, undertake when and where you want but surprisingly few accidents.
